At least, that's what Nate told himself as he pulled onto the Easton Academy campus, more specifically, Dulcinea. He was here to pick up his little sister, Jaylee, and take her to do something that was probably the most important things he would ever have to do.
He was going to find a ring for his soon to be fiancee, Natasha Sommers.
What could he say about Natasha? She was beautiful, articulate, clever and she had a wonderful sense of humor, but she was also on the other side of the country.
Nate had been all supportive like a good boyfriend should. He had told her to follow her dream and go to whatever school it was she wanted to go to. Even if it meant her having to see him every other month and during the summers. That's what true love was like, right? Waiting for that one to come along, and do anything to keep the relationship afloat. He was one of those kind that didn't believe in the word divorce and was not afraid to go to relationship counseling if need be. But She had turned him into such a creature. If anything, only she could be able to undo him.
But she would never do that. He just knew in his heart that she wouldn't.
As she pulled up to the curb in front of Dulc, he pulled out his phone and texted Jay, alerting her to his presence downstairs. He had gone to Cali to see Nat only a week before, but he was so glad to be back on the east coast with the people he loved the most, including his little Jaybird. If there was any opinion he valued heavily, it was hers. He was aware that she was leery of Nat, but he also knew that she wanted him to be happy.
While he waited, the flipped the radio on, scanning for something she'd like. What did the kids like these days? Patrick Stump? Deciding to shuffle through his CD's he decided on FOB. She'd like that, maybe. |

It felt like it had been years since she had seen her big brother. In reality it had only been a week, but she had missed him. She always hated when he left for California. Mostly because of what California stood for. She used to really like Natasha, she really did. And then she moved to California and everything seemed to change. The fake older sister she used to love wasn’t there anymore. That’s when Jay figured something us, when Natasha started pulling away. Ever since then she had been scared that her brother was going to get caught up in something and get hurt.
She jumped and grabbed her phone when she heard it buzz, smiling when she saw her brother’s name across the screen. She figured it was him telling her that he was there but she opened it anyways. He suspicions were confirmed as she read it and she jumped up, sliding her flip flops on and grabbing her keys. Then she was out the door, taking the steps two at a time down the stairs, excited to see her big brother again. Ya she had seen him the night he had got in but that was different. Bryce was there too. This was just one on one time with Nate.
Jumping in the car a big smile grew on her face and Fall Out Boy graced her ears. ‘Have I mentioned you’re the best big brother?’ She leaned over and gave him a huge hug before sitting back in her seat and buckling her seat belt. ‘So what is on the agenda today?’ [/style] [style=font-family:tahoma; font-size:8px; line-height:10px; letter-spacing:3px; color: #2A86B9; text-align:justify;]- - - - - - I KNOW THAT HE'S THE ONLY ONE. The Words: go here The Outfit: goes here The Notes go here "Not nearly enough." He said, bracing for the squeeze. It was always awkwardly done and she always seemed to have the strength of eleven bears when she hugged him, but Nate had not once in his life minded any of her hugs. Even when they were at awkward times like in the mall or in front of his basketball or baseball buddies in high school, he didn't care. His face may have said go away little sister but they never failed to make his day. It was a charade that in the past, he had to deal with. Now that he was older, he just enjoyed every minute of it.
Besides, Jay was getting older too.
"One day, you're gonna grow out of those hugs and then what will I do?" He said, feigning sadness on his face. He had to admit, those two weeks away from his family were hard. And that's why he was so glad Natasha was going to come back to Easton instead of him having to move to Cali.
"And I wanted you to help me with something really important. Something I only trust you with." He scratched his head and started the car, pulling out of the parking lot and onto the main road.
"I want you to help me pick out a ring for Nat."
After he spoke, he wanted to say more, but he wanted to also give Jay time to process what that meant. He knew she hadn't been really fond of Natasha lately, but he just thought it was a phase brought on from Natasha's transfer to UCLA. As soon as she was back home, back in his life, back in his arms, Jay would understand. She'd see that she was the same Nat and she would see how much he loved her and how much she loved him.
After driving for a few minutes, he pulled up in the shopping center parking lot outside of Tiffany's.

'I tell you all the time. You just don't listen. Not my fault.' She stuck her tongue out at him with a small laugh. She wished she could spend all the time in the world with her brother. He seriously was her favorite person in the world. She looked up to him more than anyone and trusted him with her life. And she knew he'd take care of her.
'I am never going to outgrow hugging you dork. That is not something you outgrow.' Jay smiled at the image in her head of them being way old and her going up and hugging him. She loved hugging her brother and if she hadn't grown out of it as a teenager she knew she never would. Hugging was how she showed her affection to him, so why would she all of a sudden stop?
She turned her head to watch him as he spoke and could feel herself starting to tense up. When he mentioned it being really important she could only think of one thing. Something she didn't want to help him do. She felt like he was just going to waste his money. When he actually said it she just kept quiet. She had nothing nice to say so it was better to keep her mouth shut. She would help him pick it out, but she would not be happy.
When they arrived at Tiffany's, Jay got out of the car silently. She waited for Nate to follow suit and just followed him into the store. She wouldn't say anything until she had to. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: dddddd; border: #cccccc solid 8px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;] . The Words: go here The Outfit: goes here The Notes store here Nate knew that in the silence between them, she wasn't as ecstatic as he was about the ring. He was well aware of Jaylee's opinion of Nat, and he loved his sister, but he loved Nat too. No one could ever take Jay's place in his heart, but he had to stand his ground. He loved Natasha more than any other girl he had dated, and he had dated his fair share, but she was the one who stuck with him, who stuck in his head and his heart. He was nervous, and he even asked himself over and over if this was the right decision, but he knew that it was.
He had to trust his gut.
When they got out of the car, he locked the door, and watched the silent Jay walk around to the door of Tiffany's. He opened it for her, and the duo headed straight to the counter where the diamond professional was waiting.
"Excuse me." He said to the woman, who looked up from the papers in front of her and eyed Jaylee first, and then Nate.
"Yes, sir, how may I help you today?" She asked. She was in her late 30's, early 40s, brunette and pretty, but she seemed like she was the type who liked the finer things in life, and therefore liked the finer, richer men in life. She was no impressed with the two standing in front of her, but she seemed to know that this was her job and she'd do what she had to in order to make her money.
Nate smiled. "My sister here is going to help me pick out a ring for my girlfriend."
Looked down at Jay to see her reaction to it all.
"I'm going to propose, and I want it to be perfect."
The woman looked at Jay, then back at Nate again. "Sure, right this way." She said, leading them to a case full of the smaller, cheaper diamonds.

Jay remembered when Nate had first started dating her. Natasha had been like that older sister that Jay had never had. She had let her talk to her about boys. She had tried to give Jay fashion advice until she realized that her words were falling on deaf ears. But she was just there for Jay. She never seemed like she was hiding something. She was always open with Jay. She always told her things about her and Nate's relationship that Nate hadn't even told her. Had expressed what her feelings were for Nate and had even told her what she hoped for them.
When she moved to California though everything began to change. Natasha who had once been almost as close to Jay as her own brother started slipping away. Nate said it was because she was in college and was busy, but Jay didn't believe that. She had been busy in high school and she had always made time for Jay no matter what. She could be in the middle of a project that would take hours and was due the next day and she would stop what she was doing if she knew Jay needed to talk to her. So when her sister figure stopped being a sister figure, ignoring her calls with texts promising to return them but never following through, Jay became leery. She didn't trust her. She didn't know what was going on in California but all she knew was it was bad news bears. She just wished she could convey the message to Nate.
She couldn't see her big brother get hurt. He had done so much for her and for once she wished he would listen to her and trust her more than his stupid gut that was leading him down the wrong path.
Her arms were crossed over her chest as he spoke to the woman, clearly not wanting to be there. She would give anything to sabotage this engagement. In a way that didn't hurt Nate of course. She just couldn't let him go through with this. She grossed her fingers and her toes hoping that he didn't find something he liked or that was in his price range.
Jay followed behind the woman and her brother and peered into the case. 'This is a stupid decision Nate.' She couldn't keep her mouth shut any longer. She wanted to support her brother she really did. He supported her through so many things, but when she could tell the end goal was heartbreak and misery she just couldn't. She just wished she could shake him and let him peer into the future. 'You can do better than Natasha. You shouldn't be wasting your money.' Ever since Jay stopped trusting Natasha she refused to call her Nat. Nicknames were for people you cared about and trusted. Natasha was someone who was going to just break her brothers heart and didn't deserve either her care or trust. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: dddddd; border: #cccccc solid 8px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;] . The Words: go here The Outfit: goes here The Notes go here The woman led them to the other side of the room that held the traditional engagement rings, and then smiled.
"We could use a minute, thank you." He said politely. The woman plastered on a grin, then walked away, happy to be doing whatever it was she was doing before. That's when she said it. That's when Jay said the one thing he had been waiting for her to say. Even though he thought she would have at least waited until he had actually found a ring he liked to do so, he knew she was going to protest. A part of him knew she would as soon as he told her and she found out where they were going. The way she had given him the cold shoulder in the car also spoke volumes, even in her silence. But she had sucked it up and didn't say anything, so he figured she'd wait until later to inflict her wrath upon him.
Guess it was better to get it sooner than later.
"--Jaylee." He said, cutting her off. "Lets level with one another here. I know you don't like Nat, yeah I get that. You have made it painfully obvious these last few months, moreso these last couple of weeks."
He tried to keep his voice low, turning his body to face her squarely so that, other than their obvious difference in height, they were as face to face as they could be.
"But this is my decision. We've talked about this, and even entertained the thought. She just don't know the when and the how I am going to ask her. I've made my decision."
He shook his head slowly and turned back to the glass case, peering down frustratedly at the rings.
"I understand you're protective and you're doing this because you think you love me, but if you love me, let me be happy. Let me make my own decisions, and if its a mistake, I'll take reponsiblity. But I need you in my corner right now, Jaybird. Please."
He tried to focus on each ring, but he was exasperated. The passive bickering between the two was taking a toll on him.

She didn't want her to walk away. She just wanted Nate to find a ring and leave. This was a waste of time and money in her mind and it was the one time she couldn't just suck it up and smile. She couldn't fake something this important in life. This was the biggest decision in her brother's life and she knew he was making a mistake.
She stood there with a sour look on her face just glaring at her older brother. She wasn't doing this to be mean, no. She wanted to protect him. She desperately wanted him to see it from an outsiders perspective but he wouldn't listen. He should have gotten the clue when his friends and family started disliking her, but Nate just lived in his bubble. His bubble that she knew one day would get popped and that her brother would be devastated and she wouldn't be able to do anything about it. Not like she wouldn't try, but she knew her brother. He was a lot like Bryce in the leave me alone I'm upset way. Didn't mean she wouldn't at least try to be there for him. He wasn't like Bryce where she had to tread carefully since she had known him her whole life and nothing was going to make him get rid of her.
All Jay could do was clench her jaw tight. She wanted to be happy for him, she really did. She wanted to help him find the perfect ring and gush over how he was going to ask her, but she couldn't. Not when all she could see was it going down in flames. She let out an audible sigh knowing that the sooner they found a ring the sooner they could leave and the faster Nate would see his mistake. She hoped she was wrong. She really did. Seeing her brother in pain was the last thing she wanted, but she was almost positive that this was only leading to heartbreak hotel. 'Fine Nate. Did she tell you what type of ring she wanted?' [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: dddddd; border: #cccccc solid 8px; width: 420px; padding: 15 5 15 5px;] . The Words: go here The Outfit: goes here The Notes go here Nate was a pretty patient guy. He was laid back, charming, and he generally liked to laugh, but lately he just felt frustrated, annoyed, and overall pressed between a rock and a hard place. But through all of that, he still had to be Nate. He was sure his parents could see past it, and Jay was clear on how she felt about everything, but he had been successful in keeping it from Liam and Jonny and Austin. It was weird. It was like his guy friends couldn't see it as much, but Jay and AJ seemed to hone in on it like a sniper. Mainly because neither of them liked Nat much to begin with, but they also just wanted him to be happy. He knew that. He was very well aware. It was just that he was holding on to something that he thought was worth fighting for, even if it was him fighting with those he loved the most.
"You know what, its fine. If you're going to have an attitude, I can come back and do this myself."
He loved his sister more than almost anything in the world, but he was just tired. He wanted to go back to Cali and be with Nat and prove to her that he loved her too.
Nate stood up and walked over to the woman he had been talking to before, leaving Jay behind at the jewelry case and began to explain to her that he would return later. The woman looked like she was saying something to try and get him to stay, but looked back at Jay with a look of 'figures' on her face. Nate wanted to say something to her right then, but it was no use. He just wanted out of the jewelry store as soon as possible. If he was going to come back and successfully pick out a ring for Nat, he was going to not cause a scene right now.
"Thank you." He finally said before heading out the front door of the store and back to the car.
