make this place your home Weekends were always the best part of the week. Mackenzie had grown up in Easton, so she generally headed off campus when she was able to. Today was sunny, and in Kenzie’s mind, nothing went better with a sunny day than ice cream. She had decided to treat herself to the sweet snack after jogging into town; if she hadn’t been exercising she would’ve been less likely to indulge.. well, maybe. Kenzie had a bit of a sweet tooth, so sometimes she just couldn’t bring herself to care about fitness. She supposed the caring aspect was more filtered down from her parents. After making her way into Coldstone’s, Mackenzie stood on line and contemplated what she wanted. By the time it was her turn to order, she had settled on strawberry ice cream with gummy bears – kind of a unique mix, but strawberry ice cream was her favorite flavor and gummy bears were her favorite candy.. so, why not? Kenzie threw her change into the tip jar just to hear the employees start singning. She smiled at them as she exited the ice cream shop and took a seat at one of the tables outside. There was no way she was going to spend a sunny day indoors; that would completely defeat the enjoyment of spring beginning.
Mackenzie entertained herself by texting and playing games on her phone as she ate. With about a third of her ice cream consumed, she looked up and noticed a familiar boy walking across the street. A big grin spread across her face as she stood up and jogged towards him. “Davy!” she called out as she approached. “How are you?” Mackenzie thought Davy was rather adorable, though she was a little concerned with his apparent difficulty in conversing with girls. She’d noticed him early on in the fall, but somehow they never really had any meaningful interactions. No matter how hard Mackenzie tried to get him to initiate something, he just seemed.. afraid? Is that even the right word for it? Perhaps intimidated fits better. Regardless, Mackenzie wasn’t giving up. That wasn’t in her blood.
While waiting for a response, Kenzie continued to eat her ice cream. She was sure that she had caught Davy rather off guard. As it was, he had trouble stringing more than two words together when they were speaking online. Face to face must be even harder for the boy. Oh well. Mackenzie was just looking to be his friend.. maybe she could even help him build his confidence in talking to girls. Girls weren’t that frightening. Boys were much more complicated as far as Mackenzie was concerned. No. Not complicated. Stupid. Boys just seemed to lack common sense for the most part. “Are you enjoying the sun? I’m so happy that winter seems to be over with,” she shared, hoping to ease Davy in a friendly conversation. Kenzie didn’t think that Davy was a rude boy, by any means, so she assumed that he wouldn’t just run away from her if she was asking him questions. However, she wouldn’t be surprised if he rattled off something about being busy and then took off in the other direction. Hopefully he would be relaxed enough to actually talk to her for a bit.

Davy didn’t venture out of his room very often, but when he did it was only for necessity. He would go out for what he needed or had to do and quickly come back. No detours or anything. that way he stayed safe and was never picked on. He feared being squashed by big scary Bruce McKaye so he did whatever he could to stay out of sight. Plus he didn’t really like socializing a lot.
Today he needed ice cream. He had the worst craving. He tried to get ahold of his sister to take him, but no answer. So he was on his own. And walking. Great. More opportunities to get pummeled or sucked into something he didn’t want to do. He got to the ice cream parlor and started to cross the street when he heard an all too familiar voice. He almost froze, but remembered he was in the middle of the road so he kept walking towards the terrifying voice. It wasn’t that the person was terrifying, it was what the person was and who she was that terrified him. She was a girl. And Corny kept telling him that he just needed to talk to her but he didn’t like that idea. But he had to get ice cream so he kept walking.
He waved timidly trying his hardest to be brave. ‘I-I um I’m g-g-good.’ Why was he such a shy kid. He could talk fine in front of his sister. He could talk fine in front of Aly. He had been able to talk fine in front of Em. But any other girl and he just couldn’t speak. Ever. At all. As he got closer she asked him questions. He just shrugged. ‘Um ya um sure.’ Yes he was glad that winter was over. What was his problem! In that moment he wished that he was Corny.

make this place your home Oh wow. He was stuttering. Was Kenzie really that difficult to talk to? She’d never had trouble speaking with other boys, so she wasn’t quite sure why Davy seemed to have such an issue with her. Though she tried not to take the reaction personally, it was a bit difficult for her to determine what it was that made the boy so uneasy. She was smiling.. talking about nice things.. ice cream was involved.. and yet somehow Davy looked like he was having a panic attack. He probably was for all Kenzie knew. So he’d answered her question, and now he was just quiet. Kenzie looked at him with a smile, silently prompting him to continue the conversation.
Nothing.
Seriously? Was he capable of speaking? Well this was going to be frustrating. Alright. Kenzie would carry on to see if maybe she could touch on something that Davy just might be able to contribute more than two words to. “So what are you doing out?” she asked sweetly. Come on, Davy. This was an easy one. There wasn’t even anything he’d have to think about. One ventures to Coldstone’s for one reason only – ice cream. Surely Davy could manage to answer that with a coherent sentence.
Mackenzie continued to walk with Davy into the ice cream shop where she’d purchased her own treat only moments before. “What’s your favorite flavor?” she questioned, trying to model a civil way to have a conversation for him. When ice cream was involved, there were always options – especially at Coldstone’s. “I like strawberry,” she added, giving him a moment to pull himself together. “But sometimes I like to try some of the other ones. It’s nice to change it up every once in a while.” How one could be so intimidated in speaking to a girl about ice cream, Mackenzie would never understand.

Davy’s heart was beating at a million miles per hour. He could do this. She was just a girl. He could do this. He couldn’t do this. He felt himself wanting to back away slowly and run in the other direction as quickly as he possibly could. But he was frozen and the only thing that kept him moving forward was the gentle prodding of Kenzie. He himself didn’t understand why he was so scared of the girl. Maybe it was because he didn’t understand girls at all. Sure he had been able to talk to Em and he could talk to Aily, but he had grown up with them. It was different. They were different.
‘I…um…well I um…needed ice cream.’ Oh look he actually formed a sentence. He knew it was ridiculous. She was just a girl. Just a girl. A pretty girl. A pretty girl who according to Corny had a crush on him. He didn’t like that word. Crush seemed so scary. Which it was. He didn’t like crushes. He spent his life avoiding them and yet here he was with Kenzie apparently about to get ice cream and trying his hardest not to melt into a puddle of embarrassing goo.
He clenched his jaw as he tried hard to will himself to answer the question. It wasn’t that hard. It was just his opinion. ‘Rocky Road.’ There, that wasn’t too hard. He didn’t even stutter. He knew he should ask the question back, but he just couldn’t. Thankfully she answered without him even having to ask. He just nodded at her last statement, finally reaching the counter. This part was easy. Just pretend she was gone and order his ice cream. But he seemed at a loss for words. All he wanted was a Rocky Road ice cream cone and he couldn’t even say that.

make this place your home This poor boy. Mackenzie hardly knew what to even make of it. Why couldn’t he just talk to her like a normal person? Maybe he just wasn’t a normal person. Davy certainly seemed sweet, that was probably what had drawn Kenzie to him in the first place. She liked nice boys – and Davy was also so quiet around her. He was an enigma, so he was intriguing. Mackenzie was sure she’d seen him talk to other girls before. Well, she was somewhat sure.. could have easily been another boy from the back. “I guess we all need ice cream when the sun comes out,” she smiled, approving of the content of his response more than the stuttering delivery.
Mackenzie couldn’t say she’d ever tried Rocky Road ice cream, but she knew a lot of people loved it. When it was finally Davy’s turn at the counter he seemed stunned to silence again. Oh brother. Someone really needed to help this kid out. “He wants Rocky Road in a… cone?” she turned to Davy to see if he’d nod or shake his head to clarify. “Don’t mind him. Selective mute,” she shrugged. “I’ve known him all year and I can hardly get more than two words out of him most of the time,” she joked with the cashier.
As the cashier left to make Davy’s ice cream, Mackenzie shifted her attention back to her silent companion. “You alright?” she asked, a little concerned she may have embarrassed him. Mackenzie had really just been trying to get him that ice cream he’d wanted without it looking like she was his girlfriend ordering for him; she assumed that would have been more traumatic for him considering that he couldn’t even fathom kissing a girl. A moment later the cashier came back over with the ice cream. “Thank you!” Mackenzie offered a sweet smile before turning and tilting her head towards the door, signaling Davy to follow her back outside. That boy probably needed some fresh air after that.
