Graduation had finally happened and now that that was done Kota had been hoping not to see his family for the rest of ever. Well he would see Nick. Him and Nick had bonded over the year and now Kota was going to do anything to make sure his baby brother made it out alive. But try as he might here Kota was sitting at a huge table with probably the worst matched up people ever. He had Gia to his left and Nick to his right and he could as he looked around the table he just knew that if one small wrong move was made that bad things would go down. He wished he would have eaten some of Nick's pudding.
He took a deep breath and looked across at his parents who were reading their menus trying to decide what to get. He really didn't understand why they wanted this big family gathering, plus his two best friends and his girlfriend. All he knew that this would probably be good as time as any to let everyone know his decision for his future. He just hoped that wasn't what would spark the huge inevitable fight for the evening.
Kota placed down his menu and cleared his throat looking once more around the table. He saw his father look up and his mother politely tuck her hands in her lap and a part of him wondered if maybe he should save this for later, but he knew the sooner he said something the better. 'So I've been thinking...' He would start it like that. See if anyone was even listening. He figured Nick and Gia would know where he was going with this since they already knew his new life plans, but it was Jude and Kat whom he really needed to tell. Plus his parents. And they were all here now, so he was going to pull it off like a bandaid.

SHE COULD BE A JOAN OF ARC How did she agree to this.
Well, the question was how could she not. Dakota had graduated and this was a pretty important day for teenagers that were transitioning into the semi-real world known as college. She, on the other hand, was about to be stuck in Easton for another two years. The thought weighed on her heavily as she sat at the table with Dakota's mother and father, his two sisters, his brother, and his two best friends. He had such a large support system, it was amazing.
At least that's what she thought at the beginning of the dinner.
Gia sat there beside Dakota, her hands also folded in her lap, waiting to order until most everyone else had, although her her sitting directly beside the honoree, she would probably be the second person instead of the last to order. Maybe Nick would be next and then that would be perfect.
She tried her best not to turn her body away from Kat and Jude, who she knew were still not very fond of her, even after all this time. Her father had not helped in that area. Him beating the crap out of Dakota surely didn't go over well with them, so she understood why they would have a natural aversion to her.
Her thoughts ran on and on until finally Dakota spoke. It was the moment of truth. Dakota had taken Gia out to a little bakery a week before and bought her strawberry cheesecake in order to drop the news on her (which was a good idea because he knew how much she liked strawberry cheesecake), and she had time to process what was going to happen. Nick knew as well, apparently. Now, it was just a matter of seeing the reactions of his sisters, his best friends, and his mom and dad.
This was going to be interesting, to say the least.

Anything that involved the Kaelimm family was usually destined for epic failure, crashing and burning, and all other manners of not working out well in the end. Nick had learned this a long, long time ago, but apparently his parents were still clinging to some last hope that they could be normal. Honestly, they could almost pull it off were it not for the twins. Nick had no nice things to say about his sisters, ever. It really wasn't that he just didn't like them, it was just that they had never been anything but awful to him, so he had no reason to think anything good of them.
Nick really wouldn't have minded this family dinner thing were it not for the twins, but with them in attendance also... he would have rather jumped off a bridge than gone to dinner. Unfortunately, he was currently a cripple and couldn't even walk, let along figure out a way to get over the railing of a bridge. So instead he had tried every other manner of getting out of it. He had a physical therapy appointment... but the dinner wasn't until later. His knee hurt too badly to go out, but he had pain medication. He had already made plans with Zaine or Sterling, but his parents would just make him change them. No matter what he tried to come up with, there was no way to get out of going.
This left Nick with just one thing to do... go, but forget about it... and what better way to do that than to time it so he would take the pain meds right before they left? Of course, this meant being in a semi-significant amount of pain for an extra 20 minutes before he could take the pills, but that 20 minutes of pain would be nothing compared to the pain of being coherent at a family gathering with his family. So he just waited it out, took the meds, and let Kota drive him to the restaurant, where he was seated between his brother and the wicked witch of the world, Isla. Thankfully, Kota was on his right side, so that meant Isla wouldn't be able to kick him in the knee again like she'd done last time he'd seen her.
Nick just slumped into the chair, setting his crutches on the floor beside him, and scowled at the menu in front of him. They didn't even choose a place with normal food... and he couldn't even read any of the titles. This was probably going to be the worst night ever. Luckily, he could already feel the medication kicking in and the nice drugged haze started settling in on him. He was only just coherent enough to recognize when Dakota was talking, and turned just enough so that he could focus on Kota, but keep an eye on Isla. He already knew what Dakota was going to say, so it wasn't like it really mattered... but considering how Kota was really the only member of his family that he actually liked, it was only polite that he actually pay attention to him. He didn't have much time with his brother left anymore, so he might as well savor it while he still could.

i was climbing now i'm falling
[atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: ffffff; border-left: #262626 solid 10px; width: 515px; padding: 5 5 5 5px;]He didn't know how he had been coerced into this, he really didn't understand how he had let himself be persuaded so easily. He should have been more stubborn, he had plenty of excuses after all, he could have told Dakota he still had things to sort out at their new apartment. But the problem was, his best friend new that wasn't true. Plus, Kota probably would have dragged him with him despite what he tried to say, he had practically told him he was coming after all, it hadn't exactly been put forward as a declinable invite.
So he here was, sat at a table in the type of eatery he usually avoided as much as possible, surrounded by Kota's family and friends. Well, his family, Kat and Gia. But really that was about as many people he could handle right now in his current state. Well, it was actually probably a bit much, hence why he was sat there quietly, staying as out of the way as possible and keeping his eyes on his menu, sometimes glancing at Kat to stop him from looking completely insane.
Kota's family was monstrous compared to his, he had three siblings and two parents and well, he didn't want to know what his extended family looked like. He knew the reputation of the twins though, he'd been warned before and told multiple stories of how they were so he didn't really talk to them. He didn't really talk to Nick either due to the whole, face punching incident and neither did he talk to Gia. He still didn't look upon her favourably at all, Jude definitely didn't approve. He'd managed a small conversation with his parents, who seemed nice enough but the only people who he really felt comfortable talking too were Kat and Dakota. Which kept him rather quiet. When Kota said something, loudly, as if to make an announcement, he simply gave Kat a sideways glance before looking over at his best friend, trying to avoid catching eyes with somebody else at the table.
He just wanted this dinner over and done with. - - - - - - - - - - i've been pushed off by a man who has made it to the top and now defends it 'cause he can and i have found a breach in his front line, i was open now i'm hidden from the danger of his words, i have found a good position and i'll play for what he's worth and he will find nowhere left to hide, i will lift her love and i'll break your spirit, i'll dig a hole and i'll throw you in it, only time will tell if we're all just cynics |
