There was figuring out what she could easily ship to France and what she would have to buy new. Figuring out how to get a semi-cheap international phone. Doing her class schedule. Brushing up as much as she could on her French even though she had that pretty down. Figuring out where she would even be living. Buying plane tickets. And then there were finals to study for. Finals to tutor people in. Essays to write. Helping pick the tennis captain for the next year since she wouldn’t be there. The list really was infinite.
And then there was Bryce. That’s where the list ended. Bryce. She had been dreading this for a while. This was the last thing she wanted to do, but she knew that Bryce would understand. He knew her, and he knew himself. She knew that she would rather have a good conscious about their relationship rather than be constantly worrying that as soon as she was gone for more than a month he would slip up. Not because he wanted to, but because he was Bryce and old habits die hard. Plus it would be their senior year. She didn’t want to hold him back. She knew when she returned that he would be all hers and they could get an apartment in Boston and he could leave his stuff everywhere and she could threaten to put it on the roof. And he could carry her out of a new library. And they could just be them. But that was in the future, this was now.
Jay had ended up going to his dorm just in case Aigle walked in. Not that she didn’t love Aigle, just this wasn’t a conversation for Aigle to walk in on. So there she sat on his bed, drumming nervously, waiting for him to arrive. She leaned back on the bed and let herself stare at the ceiling starting to hum softly a song she had been working on just hoping he arrived soon so they could get this over. [atrb=border,0,true][atrb=style, background-color: 101010; border: #262626 solid 10px; width: 515px; padding: 5 5 5 5px;]Soccer practice was over, leaving Bryce trudging back up to his room after he had showered at the locker rooms down at the stadium, knowing that it wouldn’t be appreciated if he trudged mud through the dormitory hallways, and he didn’t particularly feel like cleaning it off the carpet and everything in his room, considering how messy he tended to be on a good day, adding dirt to that wouldn’t be helpful.
His parents still didn’t know that he had been cleaning his act up. Not that they probably would have been there if he had called them, considering how much they worked. They were always at the hospital, it had always been like that. Not unless it was one of those times they happened to be home and he was getting himself into trouble, so they could sit there and judge him for it afterwards. They probably wouldn’t even believe that he had joined both the rugby and soccer teams at Easton, or that he had given up smoking, they would probably hardly even believe he had Jay. His aunt and uncle knew though, as much as he disliked his aunt’s meddling, he was on good terms with his uncle and cousins and they had probably mentioned it to them in passing or something, he didn’t know.
He reached his door, pulling his dorm key out to unlock it, but once the key was in and he had turned it in the lock, he realised it was already unlocked. Which just told him he’d either forgotten to lock his door when he had left earlier, or Jay was there, the latter of which seemed more likely right now. Letting himself in, he was right, spotting her on his bed through the door leading into the bedroom area of his dorm room. “Hey,” he said, dumping his bag by his bedroom door, sitting on the bed and leaning over her to kiss her. - - - - - - - - - - and all the roads we have to walk are winding, and all the lights that lead us there are blinding, there are many things that i would like to say to you but i don't know how, because maybe, you're gonna be the one that saves me, and after all, you're my wonderwall |

But then again when you have bad news to tell someone time always seems to stretch on. She just wanted to get it over with and be them. She knew that it wasn’t the best thing that could be happening, but she also knew that it was for the best. It was only one school year after all. And then she’d be back and her and Bryce would pick up right where they left off. It wasn’t as if she was totally getting rid of him. No she still wanted that house that she shared with him where his things were all over and she would threaten to throw them all over the lawn. She wanted that life. Just that dream had to take a pause as she lived out another dream for a year. And as much of a surprise as it was she knew that he was happy for her. Didn’t want her to leave, but happy for her. But Jay was confident that this short break would be a blink of an eye compared to the years they would spend together.
She sat up so that she could kiss him better as he walked in the room. There was nothing more than she wanted to do right then than just be with him. It was really no secret that Jay found the boy who she already found insanely attractive ten times more attractive, if that was even possible, after he got home from soccer. But she had to contain herself. For once in her life she had to contain herself. This was important. And she just wanted to get it out of the way. Although she figured as soon as she told him she’d be sent to her own room which she didn’t want, but the sooner she told him, the sooner he’d get back to normal Bryce.
Jay moved and crawled into Bryce’s lap, wrapping her arms around his neck and kissing his cheek. She rested her head on his shoulder, nuzzling him a bit before letting out a sigh. ‘Brycey we need to talk.’ She was hoping that the affection she was showing and the fact that she said Brycey and not Bryce would make him realize it wasn’t all bad. Because really it wasn’t. They still got to be together until she left and they would be together again when she returned. It was just that time in between that was iffy. Jay would still try and talk to him every day at least because even broken up and across the sea she was still going to love him. It was just a question of how he was going to react. It still felt strange to think that at some point, this wouldn’t be happening anymore, because she would be in France, and he would still be in Easton. It had taken him long enough to admit his feelings for her in the first place, and for her to agree to go out with him, and now she was leaving. He wasn’t going to stop her from going, even though he didn’t want her to go. He just didn’t even want to think about her leaving for as long as he possibly could.
When she said that they needed to talk, he automatically froze a little, naturally wary about anything whenever someone said that they ‘needed to talk’, he couldn’t help it really. And even if she hadn’t said it in a manner that made him think that he was in trouble or something, it still left him sceptical about what it was that she thought that they needed to talk about.
“What do we need to talk about?” he asked, although somewhere in the back of his mind he guessed that he already knew what it was going to be about. It was probably going to be about when she left. He wasn’t an idiot, he could probably guess exactly what she was thinking might happen while she was gone. It wasn’t like he hadn’t thought about it himself, on more than one occasion. She was his first real, long term girlfriend, and he knew what he had been like before her. She knew that too. And while he didn’t blame her for it, if that was really what she wanted to talk about, he could already feel himself starting to mentally shut off, like he always did.
So much for not thinking about it for a while. yeah, i'm no angel, i'm just me, but i will love you endlessly, wings aren't what you need, you need me, there's a house on the hill with a view of the town and i know how you adore it, so i'll work everyday through the sun, and the rain, until i can afford it, yeah, your friends may think i'm crazy because they can only see i'm not perfect |

Just sitting there wrapped up in him made her dread what she was going to have to talk to him about. It wasn’t as if she actually wanted to break up with him, but she knew him. She knew that if the roles were reversed he’d probably do the same thing. She wouldn’t blame him either. When she got back from France then they could pick up where they left off and just be them. Maybe it wouldn’t be so smooth at first and they would have to rework out kinks, but she knew they would be fine. They had been through worse. They would get through this just fine.
‘Well…France.’ Jay bit her lip and looked down before sighing. She had to get this over with. She took a deep breath and looked up at him. ‘I love you Bryce. You know I do. And we’ve been best friends for years. Meaning I know you. Really well. And it’s not that I don’t trust you, but drunken accidents happen and I won’t be here to anchor you and I don’t want something to happen and then I resent you for the rest of ever. She took another deep breath hoping that Bryce didn’t resent her for even wanting to do this. ‘So I was thinking just while I’m in France we don’t date. It’s only a year. I’ll be back before you know it. And then we’ll be in college and we can get an apartment together and it will be great. I just don’t want to mess up what we have just because one or both of us make some stupid drunken mistake while I’m gone.’ There she said it. Now the ball was in his court. And she was pretty sure his next move would to be to ask her to leave. Half of him wanted to tell her to stop right there, not to say anything else, because he really didn’t want to talk about it, not now. That half of him just wanted to get up and walk out of the room so he didn’t have to hear it either, but it also felt like he couldn’t move from where he was sitting. So all he could do was sit there in silence, arms still wrapped around her, listening as she continued on, saying everything that he had dreaded possibly hearing from her.
“Yeah, I get it,” he answered, realising that she had finished speaking a while ago, he’d just been sitting there trying to process it all, trying to stop himself from freaking out too much while she was in the room. It was hard enough to even talk right now, his voice sounding distant and strange even to him.
He unwrapped his arms from around her after another few moments, clearing his throat a little as he tried to mentally shake himself into appearing a little better with this than he obviously was, although it probably wouldn’t work too well, she’d probably already picked up on exactly how he felt about what she had just told him she wanted to do as soon as she had finished telling him. “Alright. We’ll do that then.”
“I have some, uh… homework and stuff I need to get done, so I should probably do that,” he said, after another moment, knowing that was probably a poor excuse but he needed some time to himself to process everything, it was easier for him that way, that way nothing was said that made it worse, or he wouldn’t end up saying anything that would upset her. He’d always been like that. yeah, i'm no angel, i'm just me, but i will love you endlessly, wings aren't what you need, you need me, there's a house on the hill with a view of the town and i know how you adore it, so i'll work everyday through the sun, and the rain, until i can afford it, yeah, your friends may think i'm crazy because they can only see i'm not perfect |

She didn't know how he was going to react. She knew it wasn't going to be good but she just hoped he didn't lash out. Not that he would ever do anything to hurt her. No she just didn't want him to spiral or freak out or totally push her away. He was still her Bryce even if soon they wouldn't be together. And it wasn't as if they were breaking up right that second. It was delayed. They still had a few months together and she just wished she could get him to focus on the bigger picture, but he was Bryce and she knew that he didn't process things the same way that she did.
Jay gulped and clenched her jaw as she felt his arms slipping from around her side. She was the one breaking up with him so why did she feel like she was about to cry. She knew why. It was because she didn't want to break up with him. She wanted to bring him to France with her. She wanted them to run around one of the most romantic cities in the world and have fun. She wanted to have sword fights beneath the Eiffel Tower. She wanted them to walk the streets late at night. She wanted them to ring the bells at Notre Dame and then run like hell so they didn't get caught. But none of that would be happening because she was going to be alone and her best friend would be in Virginia. Oceans away. He was so much more than her boyfriend in that moment. He really always had been. And if she could she would back out of going to France and stay here with him, but the money had already been sent in and there was a no refund policy. She was going and there was no way to back track.
She slowly crawled off of his lap taking a deep breath. She stood, smoothing out her shorts and holding the tears the threatened to fall back. She couldn't let him see her cry. It wasn't her turn to be sad just yet. She had to allow him to have his time. Allow him to process and be upset. To go get drunk with his friends or just lay there in his room. She had to be understanding and go back to her room alone. Had to wait for him to call her. Had to deal with all of the consequences of the decisions she had made. Not that she had made bad decisions, going to France would be good for her, for them, but there were still consequences that hurt no matter how much she was looking forward to this adventure.
'Call me when you're done ok?' She knew he didn't have homework. And she knew he knew that she knew that. She also knew that he knew that when she said to call her when he was done with his homework she meant for him to call her when he was done with the time and space that he needed. She leaned down and kissed his cheek, giving him a small hug before she slipped out of his room, holding herself and telling herself that everything was going to work out.
