personality:
sarcastic. the sarcasm is really only a cover up for kieran’s insecurities. these include his unconfessed love for kitto, his parents’ judgments, and his depression. these snarky remarks, if you know ki for long enough, are clearly meaningless and are never meant to hurt anyone. most people know that kieran is harmless, and would never ever in a million years hurt anyone, no matter how much he dislikes someone. this sarcasm is just his cold front, something that most people can easily look past.
sweetheart. kieran is not much of a sweet talker, but he is a complete sweetheart. he’s always keeping in mind nice things he can say about people, no matter what they look like or how mean they are to him. he’s one of those people that goes into the library, opens random books and sticks little notes inside to compliment people just so he can make their day.
hypersensitive. loud sounds and yelling completely freak out kieran because he’s so prone to the feeling of being screamed at by his parents and arguments in his household. the boy is very receptive to many feelings of other peoples and it affects him drastically. if someone is upset, it usually makes his stomach uneasy and almost gives him the sensation of throwing up. when others are happy, all of ki’s depression usually slips away and he senses their emotion, making him cheerful himself.
accepting. this goes hand and hand with his endless trust for people. anyone who offers a promise to kieran, he’ll readily accept it. it is hard to know why he is so accepting of others. probably because he is so prone to the judgment of his strictly catholic family, whom are always repeating their beliefs to him. he knows how it feels to be judged, so he tries his hardness not to do it to others.
depressed. throughout his childhood and unaccepting parents, kieran has find depression multiple times. the first time was when he started getting hit by his father. the second when he moved to england, and the third when he realized that he was in love with his best friend. the depression is always hidden, eager to slip up and flood his life with a heavy emptiness.
emotional. kieran is very bad at hiding his emotions. despite going through much throughout the duration of his childhood, he is not a very strong person. almost every little thing makes him break down. if someone is making fun of him, ki finds it difficult not to cry. any criticism makes the boy tremble. the boy’s sensitivity from a young age was always open to his parents’ judgments.
overall, kieran tries to be the best person he can be. he fights through his family problems by confiding in his best friend, kitto. although this worked at first, kieran realized that confiding in kit meant pouring his whole life into his closest friend, making him fall in love with the person who actually accepted him. this was and still is his downfall.

history:
on a sunny day on march fifth, 1996, kieran emery was released from his mother’s womb and began to flower into a world that his fingers had never grasped. at the time, his catholic parents were only on their second child, but they had begun the attempt to conceive the very night of their marriage and had not stopped since – the catholic way of things. by the time he was only four years old, the galloways had added another three children: a set of twins and a another boy. their family life was relatively normal, church all day on sundays, judging any non-catholic during the week, and two alcoholic parents to swallow the responsibilities of their children and godly expectations. like most catholic families, the galloways kept their image of a perfect, cheerful household so everyone thought that they were okay. however, this family kept harsh judgments on others, hypocritically, just like they had always done.
in grade school, kieran dealt with the stresses of his family’s weight: five siblings and two critical parents. everything was expected to be perfection from all six of the young children, and nothing less. kieran did not mind this much considering he had never had experience with any other lifestyle. this was the same time that ki began singing and dancing, one of his newfound favorite things. his parents thought this was just a phase of life, but after a few years and kieran’s introduction to middle school, they realized that he was turning into something a catholic boy was never allowed to be – soft.
to kieran himself, he had done nothing wrong. he had a passion for singing and dancing, which seemed just fine to the boy himself. while his parents refused to let him participate in lessons for either of the two, he still found his way around and taught himself his talents. when christopher and bridget found out that he was sneaking around and training himself, their suspicions raised and they refused to let the boy out of their sight. every night before bed, the two parents would read aloud to their six children from the bible, and then they would take ki to another room and tell him how being gay was wrong and how god didn’t love people that were gay.
kieran went to bed every night with tears welled in his green eyes.
january 14, 2008 was the first time christopher slapped ki across the face. his five brothers and sisters watched, his older sister cried, and his mother walked out of the room. this continued for months, and eventually got worse. his siblings refused to tell anyone due to threats from their father, and ki’s fear overtook him. the next year when he told his friend at school, and his friend told their teacher, kieran was taken from his family. his family had one of two options: give up kieran to child services or send him to school in england until they had shown family home improvements. their religion in mind, the family refused to give the child up and instead sent him to a prep school in england, truro for what would have been his american high school education.
living with his temporary family there, things started looking up. although kieran was nearly a mute, his new family let him participate in dance and singing lessons. the only time he talked was when he sang and when he had to answer questions in school. even then, he was silent most of the time. this was the first time kieran had ever tasted the sting of depression, sinking to a place that he thought he would never be freed of.
at school, the scrawny boy did not fit in, his accent was fully american, and his only friends were the books that he immersed himself into. the boy’s life became a fiction novel, full of musicals and happy lyrics. for over six months, neither his singing capabilities nor his dancing creativity could pull him from the rut that he buried himself into. that was, until he met kitto rowan treleven. kitto was compassionate, caring, open, loving. the boy pushed himself into kieran’s life and let him open up, revealing the excitable child that once remained. kitto and kieran became the closest of friends. while kitto’s dedication to his best friend alyssa usually overrode their friendship, ki was happier than ever to have someone that was there for him.
the teen boy’s personality began to bloom, as did his sarcasm that blurred out his feelings of depression and hatred for his family back home, the one that did nothing to save him from their father’s terror. kieran, the harmless, damaged boy began to put up a cold front to anyone and everyone who tried to enter his life other than kitto with a cruel sarcastic response to every remark.
this defense mechanism doubled in intensity when kieran began to grow feelings for his best friend. ki beat himself up over this desire, something his parents would despise. were they right? would god stop loving him because he felt more than friendship for kitto? these questions haunted kieran’s mind back into an endless hole of despair and hopeless thoughts. the previously golden skinned boy covered up his feelings of emptiness so no one would know, and when kitto decided to move to america, kieran begged his parents to move back home. back to the hell run by ki’s father himself. moving back to america was a sacrifice, but kieran knew that if he stayed in england he would have lost his closest friend.
it was nice to be back in america, and luckily kitto was going to a school in his home state: virginia. his five siblings had changed in the three years the boy had been gone. he was a stranger in his own home. kieran excited to see his sister, cliona, who was only one year old when he moved to england. the boy was devastated to see hidden bruises on his little twin brothers, who seemed to take on the consequences of his departure. guilt piled on the gentle, sensitive, sarcastic young boy, realizing him leaving meant his siblings got the whiplash.
kieran’s mother was only the shell of the woman she had been before, and his father was a bigger drunk than ever. ki’s only refuge was at school with his best friend, the school that his parents happily served over the check for. anything to rid their unmanly disgrace of a son.
