your eyes they tie me down so hard
this school year was nothing short of intense. with all of the murders, the killer being claimed dead, loosing the feeling of safety in their own dorms, almost losing each other... ev felt now was a time to celebrate. now, the streets were safe. the killer was dead, and most of the school was going to be busy at prom tonight, and they were going to be there.
well, that's what ev made seth think. it wasn't easy to keep things from him. they shared everything. every thought, every plan, every waking hour with each other. so when ev decided to surprise seth with reservations to the nicest restaurant in town (after they decided they were going to prom together), he had to go out of his way and maybe even act a little suspicious to keep seth from finding out. now, it was a little before they were actually planning on leaving to go to prom. ev's anxiety was rising because he hadn't ever really done this before, and he had managed to sneak outside to the car without being seen (he was sure seth was talking when he shut the door behind him). in the van, ev had left a small bundle of flowers in the back seat, waiting to be given to somebody in exchange for a smile, a kiss, and a hug. ev looked them over in the sunset light and even smelled them once before shutting the van door, and scampering back up to the dorm. mildly out of breath, ev straightened his tie and swallowed heavily, walking up to the door and, like a good date, knocked on the door.

Seth and Ev had agreed to not look at each other until they were both finished getting ready, and Seth was staying true to that, holed up in their room while Ev got access to the bathroom. Which was a privilege, indeed, because the bathroom had a mirror. However, that didn't stop Seth from talking at him constantly (about what, even Seth couldn't tell you, and if Ev was listening to a word Seth was saying he wasn't making it obvious) while he put on his suit and straightened his bow tie and lamented the fact that converse were not appropriate footwear for prom.
He fell silent as he worked at the laces of his nice shoes, concentrating on getting the bunny through the hole. He had just gotten them nice and tight when there was a faint knock at the door to their dorm... Seth frowned slightly, standing.
"Ev, are you gonna get that?" he called. He waited a moment, but there was no reply. Carefully, he pulled open the bedroom door, shielding his eyes just in case. "Ev, I'm answering the -" he began, but he caught sight of the vacant bathroom and dropped his hand back down, confusion growing. Hesitantly, he stepped toward the door, taking a deep breath before pulling it open.
As soon as he saw Ev standing there with his bunch of flowers, all dressed up, Seth's eyes widened and he opened and closed his mouth a few times, not even sure where to begin with the unexpected situation.
"What -" he started, mind hurrying to catch up.

the silence after his knocking was short lived, as ev could hear muffled talking on the other side. success, he thought, seth didn't notice him leaving. his smile grew a little as there was some indistinguishable noises ev could only guess as seth discovering his absence from the dorm. his grip tightened around the flower stems as he could just sense seth nearing. his head ducked a bit and the toes of his shoes turned toward each other as the door knob turned. ev could feel his cheeks already turning red.
yes, this was cheesy. but ev wanted them to be this way. he wanted to be able to look back at their high school years and laugh because of how smitten they were with one another. ev looked up to meet seth's eyes, his whole face was burning hot and he could only picture the way he could possibly look. just a young boy in a suit with just-too-long pants holding red and white flowers, his face just as red as some of the petals. "heh-hey." he said in a voice not quite confident. "i-uh-um." damn, he had the whole script planned out in his head, but where was it? ev sucked in his bottom lip and looked down at the flowers, but quickly returned his gaze up to seth. "i was thinking i should.. play this part right." he exhaled in attempted laugh, some sort of humor in this as he could feel himself turn into a blonde ruby.
"and, um... we're not actually going to prom." his smile grew on his face, biting down on his lip at staring up at seth. "you're dressed right, though, so... um-. " he held out the flowers, the rest of him held back and a bit reserved. "i'm- i'll drive." he could feel himself shaking, but it was an all new kind of shake. there was a tremble of excitement in him that only made him want to grab seth's hand and run off into that orange-pink sunset and never return.

Eventually, Seth just closed his mouth again. Nothing was coming out, and the sight of Ev swiftly turning into a tomato in front of him was much more entertaining than the sound of his own voice (if there was heat creeping up Seth's own neck, if his own cheeks were splotched a little red, he chose to ignore it). He glanced down at the flowers clutched so tightly in Ev's hand, gaze drifting over the suit that almost just fit, right up to that familiar face and those eyes that suddenly made him feel so nervous...
Seth chewed on his lip as Ev began to speak, shuffling slightly as he stumbled over his words. At Ev's somewhat strangled laugh, Seth also made a sound of amusement, which would have turned into something embarrassingly like a giggle had he not slammed his mouth shut and attempted to lean casually against the door frame, instead, nearly falling over as he misjudged the distance between it and his shoulder. He managed to grab onto it just in time, steadying himself, nodding quickly in response to Ev's words and searching desperately for his own.
"We're...... not?" he blinked, mind jumping briefly to does he not want to go to prom with me before he realized Ev wouldn't be standing here in a suit with flowers if he was calling the evening off. He looked down at his clothes when Ev told him he was dressed right. "Um, yeah," he replied, though it sounded more like a question than an agreement. He was so busy staring at Ev that he didn't even notice the flowers being offered to him until a beat too late, and then he gingerly took them from Ev's shaking hand and looked at them for a moment, slowly bringing them up to his nose to smell them; it seemed like the natural thing to do, after all.
"These are..." he swallowed thickly, looking from the flowers to Ev and back and back again, "they're really... lovely." Yeah, not the word he would have liked to use, but it worked. He looked at them a second longer, then carefully turned back in to the dorm and placed the flowers on the (conveniently placed) shelf by the door. He was almost overwhelmed by this whole gesture, but he tried not to let it show, wiping his sweaty palms on his blazer as he stepped into the hall. "Okay, let's... yeah." He hoped his smile wasn't as clumsy and shy as he suddenly felt.

your eyes they tie me down so hard
had this been with anyone else, ev would have melted into a puddle of embarrassment and slithered his bubbling goo into the nearest shadow, never to be seen again by his date. but this was seth. the one person ev could be himself with, completely himself and not have to worry about what seth thought of him. he knew seth loved him, they almost fought over who loved the other more. it was disgusting. but it was also the most comforting thing in the world. and without their stupid "i love you" fights, ev wouldn't be capable of doing this.
as seth took the flowers, ev lit up a bit. well, that was a relief. when he was buying the flowers, there was a moment of self doubt and ev considered tossing them. what if seth took it offensively? sometimes ev wasn't sure what works and what doesn't, and he was glad this choice was successful. he awkwardly wiped his own palms on his legs, going to tuck his hands in his pockets but seeing seth begin to walk out of the dorm. "oh- hold on." he took a step, paused, motioned a bit to try and get around seth, half chuckled and half sighed, and stepped around him to walk into the dorm and grab the mustang keys.
"okay!" he walked over to his date with a bounce in his step, holding his hand out to grab seth's with perhaps a bit too much confidence. ev took it gently, holding the keys in his other hand and walking on down the hall. part of him hoped somebody would be around, someone they knew. to see them like this. happy.
but nobody was around except for a couple in the parking lot going to their own car, off to prom. how original. ev smirked a bit, his hand holding seth's was slippery by the time they got to the mustang, and ev hoped seth didn't think much of it. he paused, letting go of seth's hand and looking at the key ring. for a moment that lasted too painfully long, he tried to open the passengers door for seth with the dorm room key. once he realized his mistake, ev quickly switched it. "heh-." he tried to laugh it off, but it was interrupted with an abrupt swallow and he once again could feel heat in his cheeks.
he held the door open for seth, and then climbed into the drivers seat. something about that old mustang, something about having such an antique, beautiful, collectible car in his care really made him feel... manly as hell. he turned the key and the smooth rumble of the engine roared to life, and they began to coast in the opposite direction of the easton hilton.
they rolled up to a stop light, the roads unsurprisingly empty. ev felt like his mouth had been glued shut, and to say a simple word would cause an enormous effort. but, that was an effort he was willing to make for seth, and he peeled his lips open and spoke with a dry tongue. "i just... i mean we- we haven't ever... been on a ... a legitimate date." he motioned his hands a bit, almost defensively. ev stared over at seth for a minute, a bit put off. this was his date. this person, glowing and nervous and looking so perfect. ev wouldn't have realized the light had turned green if not for the glow it strewn upon seth. "eheh." he accidentally noised out, closing his lips and trying to breathe like a normal human being. "i think you deserve a nice date." he intended to say it loud enough for seth to hear, but his confidence plummeted to the pavement and was run over by the car as they pulled up to the l'oie chant parking lot.

"Oh, right," Seth watched as Ev awkwardly squeezed past to grab the keys, brain not really registering that he was in the way until the deed had already been done... and then he stepped out of the way of the door but bumped into Ev, who was no longer trying to get through, but luckily Ev was holding out his hand and Seth just took it, ignoring the fact that his probably felt sweaty and warm and gross because this was Ev and Ev was supposed to love even the sweaty, warm, gross bits of Seth.
He didn't say much on the way to the car. He was too busy smiling to himself and blushing and peeking at Ev out the corner of his eye. He looked good, all dressed up with his hair styled a bit, and happy, and Seth felt... lucky. And proud. And even though their palms were sweaty (knees weak arms are heavy vomit on his sweater already mom's spaghetti), he held Ev's hand just a little bit tighter and smiled just a little bit harder.
When they got to the Mustang, Seth barely noticed Ev's struggle - he'd been taking Ev's distraction as an opportunity to actually stare at him, and had consequently zoned out of everything else. It wasn't until Ev made a weird gulping sound that Seth snapped back to reality (oh there goes gravity oh there goes rabbit he choked he's so mad but he won't give up that easy), and by that point Ev was getting the door open and Seth was climbing into his car and they were soon on their way.
They rode in silence for a while, which was unusual. And it was an awkward silence, for sure - Seth couldn't count how many times he's opened his mouth to say something only to find that nothing was there - but somehow comfortable, too, because this was still Ev and Seth still couldn't keep the grin off his face, even as they drove along saying nothing and even as he stared at the familiar scenery going by the window. They slowed to a stop, and Seth chanced a glance at Ev just as Ev began to speak, a bemused smile playing across his lips at the unnecessarily defensive demeanour. He turned a little toward him in the seat, just watching him. Listening. He half wanted to reach across and kiss him, but the light changed colour, so he settled for a little nudge to the shoulder with his knuckles, instead, and then absently smoothed at the crumples in Ev's sleeve at the bend of his elbow.
"Yeah, we... should've gone on one a long time ago," he agreed quietly, and then laughed a bit, bringing his hand back to his lap and looking down at it, lip finding its way between his teeth once more. He nodded slightly, hair falling around his face. "You, too," he mumbled, only looking up again when the car stopped and he realized they'd arrived. "Oh," he breathed; he could've sworn they'd only just left the Vid parking lot.

your eyes they tie me down so hard
"oh... yeah, i'm sorry we didn't." ev frowned at his lap a little at the mention of going on dates sooner. it was admittedly a hard transition going from hiding to being a public... couple. all his life ev hid himself from the world, sheltered what he liked or what his weaknesses are. now, they were safe to show the world their love (whether or not they wanted to see it. but let's be real, who wouldn't want to?). ev turned off the car and pulled the keys out, holding them in his lap for a moment. "but i'd rather be late than never heheh... eh.." without the bravery to chance another look at seth, ev stepped out of the car and quickly walked around to open the door for seth. a smile was plastered on his lips even though he was still inexplicably nervous. for a moment, ev offered his hand to hold seth's, but at the last second changed to loop their arms together, and then stopped before that was accomplished. he wasn't leading his grandmother across the street, damn it. ev stared down and took seth's hand. "sorry heh." he stood there a moment, frozen in time and numb thoughts. "um..." ev looked up at seth a moment, and then toward the restaurant. "okay... c'mon." he said, his tone friendly as he walked onward.
after giving his name and waiting a couple of minutes, they were lead to their table. the atmosphere here was very calm and a little off-putting. ev didn't know if this was really what they were ready for or if he maybe went a step too far. part of him wondered if people proposed to their significant others here, another part of him refused to think about that because that would lead to him thinking he was leading seth to think he was going to. ev stared with a relatively scared face at the cutlery on the plate in front of him. "uh-..." he swallowed again, looking over to see if a waiter was nearby but there weren't any. "i hope this isn't... mm- too much." he mumbled, looking from seth down to the beautiful white silk table cloth again. "i wanted it to - i mean.. i didn't want to... i-." he paused and sighed a little, apologetic eyes watching over at seth as his hands fumbled with one another. "i wanted it to be kind of... special, i guess. heh." ev had to remind himself it was just seth no the other side of the table in order to look back up from it. "is it okay? oh- don't answer that. i shouldn't. hah. ask. heh." their drinks were brought to them and ev gladly chose to shut himself up with a generous amount of some fancy flavored tea.

"It's not..." Seth swallowed hard, shrugging, "I didn't mean, like... I mean, we should've... thought about it sooner, is all." He glanced almost shyly up at Ev, faint smile flickering. "Now that we can." He'd never faulted Ev for them needing to hide. Really, Seth had never been one to plaster any sort of relationship all over town, anyway. Hiding, while stressful, had also been somehow thrilling; his and Ev's dirty little secret, all their own. And this was still their own. Because, no matter who knew they were together or not, nobody could ever know everything. Seth liked that. He liked knowing the pieces of Ev that nobody else ever would. He was about to say more, but Ev stepped out of the car and Seth was left twisting his hands uncomfortably together.
It wasn't until Ev opened the door and Seth was mid-step out of the car that he realized his seatbelt was still on. He looked down at it for a moment, bordering on absolutely mortified, and then dropped his head and chuckled a couple times, reaching for the buckle. Once upon a time, he'd been better at this whole date thing. But that was before Ev, before it was real.
He half reached for Ev's hand, then let him take his arm, and then his hand again, just watching sort of curiously as Ev tried to figure out what to do. "We're the smoothest couple," he commented once they finally got going, giving Ev's hand a squeeze to show that he was perfectly okay with them not being that. And then he felt weird, because he was fairly certain neither of them had ever said anything about being a 'couple' before, or even said they were 'dating', and even though they were both of those things by societal standards he wasn't even sure that was the right word for it. They just, always had been, in a way. Always would be. They were Seth and Ev, best friends, in love... best loves...
The waiter led them to their table while Seth mulled this over, smiling brightly at a woman whose eyes landed on him when he happened to look up. Her gaze fell to his hand, still locked with Ev's, and he blushed furiously and focused on the back of their waiter's head instead, taking the seat across from Ev and immediately unfolding his napkin, playing with the edges of it. And it struck him that people would know they were on a date, and it struck him that, in an indirect way, they had an audience, and he began to almost feel self conscious because this was them and it was special and what if other people didn't realize that and what right did anybody else have to know, anyway?
Seth was beginning to think he might be sick, and he wasn't sure why. He would sing about loving Ev from the rooftops, if necessary, but he would much rather keep it to himself. Safe. Where nobody else could try to touch it, ruin it, destroy it. They'd struggled through so much already and, though he had complete faith in everything that they were, he was tired of feeling like they were being tested.
He watched as Ev spoke, and immediately felt himself settle again, eyes brimming with unconditional adoration. On the one hand, the cruel, hard world didn't deserve them. On the other, nothing mattered so long as he had Ev. And he did. He couldn't have loved him any less if he'd taken him to some hobo's garbage can in some dark alley in New York City for a fine feast of rat a la dumpster.
"It's..." Seth began to reply, looking up sharply as the arrival of their drinks interrupted him. He knew he couldn't fault the waiter on timing, but really. Still, he smiled and thanked him and then returned his attention to Ev, nudging his foot under the table. "It's perfect, it's... so special, and it's you, and -" He paused, frowning slightly as the waiter approached them again, asking for their order. And, yeah, there was the menu, forgotten under his elbow. "Um, do you.. know?" he began, flipping his menu open and scanning the options before his shoulders slumped in defeat. "Uh, I'm gonna need a minute."

your eyes they tie me down so hard
Even though he had asked Seth not to answer him, it was good to know that it was perfect. And even though both of them were a new shade of red, it was them. With each other. Ev's smile ached his cheeks at Seth's reassurance and he could feel his face begin to burn into a deeper shade of red. he quickly covered his face with the menu, laughing shyly. "I hope you weren't super excited about prom. I though this'd be a better night since..." Ev looked up and to to side for a moment in thought. " Since nobody from school could really bother us, I guess." nudging his foot against Seth's under the table, Ev smiled over the top of his menu.
As the waiter came up and asked what they wanted to order, Ev fumbled just as much as his partner. "Uh- no. Sorry." He apologized to the waiter as they said they'd give them a few more minutes. Ev's mouth began to water at the menu items, but his gut admittedly sank a little at the sight of the prices. His frown was short lived, though, because this was special. This was their first official date, and they didn't have to go to super expensive places like this every time. Neither of them were really that type of person. "Mmm." He tilted his head thoughtfully. Everything looked good. Even the things he didn't know how to pronounce. The waiter came back, and out of impulse Ev ordered the bread basket for an appetizer. "And I'll have the Roasted Lamb." He pointed to the menu before folding it up and handing it to the waiter, smiling over at Seth. He had to hand it to them, the lighting in this building made Seth glow. Ev smiled down at the table again, trying to remind himself to not stare.
As he grabbed the napkin and folded it in his lap, he looked back up at Seth. He opened his mouth to speak, paused, and reached for his beverage instead. As he drank it, he glanced at Seth to see how much of that was noticed. He cleared his throat, set the drink back aside and pinched the table cloth, rubbing it between his index finger and thumb before letting go and looking back at Seth. "Sssssoooo..." He stared. Ev wasn't much of the dating kind of guy, he didn't know what to talk about. Sure, you're supposed to get to know somebody during a date, but Ev knew so much about Seth already. "I'm so happy we can do this." He said, smiling a little and bumping his foot against Seth's ankle a little. For a while, while Seth was away in the ward getting the help he needed, Ev wasn't so sure they were going to be able to have quiet evenings like this. He then tilted his head the slightest and mouthed "I love you" with a small smile.

Seth laughed quietly, shaking his head. "Nah, as long as I'm with you, I'm good," he told him truthfully, gaze flickering almost shyly up to Ev's face as his smile grew. He had his menu in his hands, half lifted but forgotten as he again became distracted by the other boy. "Prom's not that important, in the long run. I kinda like this better" he added quietly, then shrugged a bit, "besides, there's always next year." He still couldn't quite believe he had Ev to call his own and, while he genuinely liked most of his other friends and didn't mind spending time with them, he knew he'd choose Ev first every time. Heck, it wasn't even a choice. He'd be happy sitting here in the restaurant with him and he'd be happy dancing at prom at him and he'd even be happy just spending this night in their sweats on the couch like every other night. He felt Ev's toe nudge against his and he looked back down at his menu, smirking as his gaze drifted over the options, giving Ev's foot a little nudge back.
He figured he should go for something a little less pricey, which made the decision-making process a whole lot easier. Seth was a bit of a pain at restaurants because he wanted to try everything, was never able to settle on just one dish (and, when he did, he always had doubts and second thoughts and ended up panic-ordering something else entirely). He eventually decided on pasta - the tried and true. Better safe than sorry, after all, though a few of the entrées looked pretty appealing, and would it really hurt to try something else? He got distracted again by the descriptions of the dishes, and jumped a bit when the waiter spoke right next to them, looking up at him frantically and then over at Ev. Of course, Ev read off his order as cool as you please, and Seth was left to grip his menu tight and scan the page quickly and, "I'll get the... ossobucco," he said, and then hurriedly closed the menu and handed it to the waiter, feeling a blush start to creep up his neck again. Trying to play it off like nothing.
He mimicked Ev's actions with the napkin, taking his time smoothing out the wrinkles when setting it on his lap, running his tongue over his lips. His mouth felt suddenly dry; he went to take a sip of water, and then found himself gulping it all down in one go and, okay, that was really classy and high-end. Thank god for Ev, familiar Ev, his Ev sitting there like a light in the darkness of fancy dress and properness. He offered him a smile, setting his glass down and hoping Ev wouldn't comment on the fact that he'd basically chugged the whole thing. He was nervous, was all. He was used to being in control of the situation, used to being the one buying the dinner and making the conversation, and while he didn't mind the ambiguity of being with Ev, it was also weird that he couldn't get away with being suave, cocky, charming Seth. Ev just knew him too well for that. If Seth put on his date face, Ev would probably think he'd gone mad. So, he was stuck being... Seth Seth. Or, rather, stuttering, fumbling, order-blurting Seth.
He nodded in response to Ev's words, smile gaining strength as normalcy started to creep back in. He slid his foot closer to Ev, leg brushing against his companion's, dimples indenting his cheeks. It was almost calming to have the familiar feeling of him there. Just there. He folded his hands on top of the table, taking a moment to look back at Ev with a soft, adoring expression. "Yeah... it feels like this was a long time coming." After everything - the drama, the heartache, the terrifying moments where it felt like nothing would ever be okay again - they were finally sitting down together in a nice restaurant and having a meal. They were finally on a date. "I love you, too," he murmured, and then he gave Ev's knee a playful shove with his own, grinning up at the waiter who arrived at that moment to place the bread basket on the table.

your eyes they tie me down so hard
After ordering their food and handing the menus back to the waiter, Ev began to feel his nerves calm down. It was hard to brave looking up at Seth. If they caught each others eyes, Ev's stomach would do something of a back flip and he'd lose his courage all over. When he looked up and Seth wasn't looking, Ev felt like he was staring at a perfectly lit fire. His eyes wouldn't budge for a moment, even if he tried. The soft smile on his lips remained as the bread was set in between them on the table.
Ev's lips grew into a wider smile, his eyes locked now on the beautifully golden bread, shinning with buttery glory and warm to the touch. Ev pulled apart the first bread stick he got a hold of and dabbed it in the oil and garlic dish beside the basket. He bit off a fourth of the stick and savored it. His eyelids drooped and head tilted as he chewed the deliciously moist bread. "mmm." Ev had grabbed his drink but hesitated. Did he really want the delicious taste of the bread flushed from his mouth so soon? Deciding he didn't, he held the glass for a little longer, chewing some more before finally giving in and taking a sip. "mmmm." The back of the chair felt cold through his shirt as he leaned back against it, his shoulders slumping. "Man..." Occupying his hands by dipping another bread stick in the oil, Ev popped another piece in his mouth. He chewed a little before speaking, "I seriously think..." Chewing a little, "That I could eat myself to deaf in bwead." He paused a moment, swallowing and grabbing another piece. "mmm." There was something of a smile pulling his already full cheeks tight as he finished chewing and took a drink of his tea. "What do you think?"

Seth tried not to stare at Ev too much, but it was difficult when he was allowed and when he looked so good and when he was sitting right there across from him. As much as he tried to fix his gaze on his waiting cutlery or the cup of tea or the restaurant decor, his eyes always found their way back to the boy on the other side of the table, expression torn between one of soft happiness and one of pure awe. Even when the waiter set the bread between them, Seth's attention hardly flickered to it before settling back on Ev, a small smile playing at his lips when he noticed the look of excitement. Food. It hardly surprised him, but he doubted he'd ever get used to it, and a laugh escaped him in spite of his best efforts to disguise it.
He reached for one of the bread sticks, though his motions were a lot slower than Ev's. He was, as usual, content to sit back and watch him devour his meal, but he figured it would be best to give his hands something to do, as well. He was just dipping his bread in the oil when Ev bit off his first mouthful, and Seth's hand paused where it was at the obscene moan which escaped him, brow furrowing as he looked up at his friend. The bread stick was forgotten in his hand. He opened his mouth to say something - maybe ask him to stop - but closed it again when Ev shoved the rest of the bread into his mouth, slowly removing his own stick from the oil to make way for Ev's second piece. "We're in -" he began, shifting uncomfortably, then bit his tongue and moved his bread stick to his mouth. A fancy restaurant, his brain completed, lips pulling into a pout as Ev moaned again, went on about just how great bread was.
Seth agreed, but for all the wrong reasons.
"It's..." he looked down at the uneaten bread stick in his hand, suddenly remembering its existence, and took a small, careful bite, chewing thoughtfully. Then, he nodded, swallowing his mouthful before replying, "yeah, pretty good." He glanced back at Ev, taking another bite, returning easily to the routine of watching him.
