likes:
adrenaline, money, anything to do with italy, art, music, sun, skateboarding, graffiti, fast food, arcade fire, summer, his ipod, his camera, lazy days, smoking, alcohol, kick boxing, painting, photography, soccer, baseball, rugby, fencing
dislikes:
his parents, his perfect older brother, drugs, people fussing over him, admitting he's wrong, anything to do with disney, manufactured pop stars, prissiness, melodramatics, coffee, tea, science, english, maths, history
aspirations:
to live a life free from his parents' expectations, to become estranged from his family, to find someone who loves him and isn't disappointed in him
motivations:
being praised, overcoming a challenge, getting a life of his own
fears:
moving back into either of his parents' houses, feeling alone and unloved, running out of second chances
key traits:
stoic, frustrated, rebellious, thick-skinned, misunderstood, playful, friendly
personality:
when people get to know milo, they think he must have some dual-personality kind of thing going on. which is sort of true, but he doesn't want it to be. basically, he's a good guy with love to give, he just has to have this bad guy façade he can play up when he needs to convince his parents he's still 'bad'. as a result of living in his brother's shadow his whole life, and various other family-orientated mishaps in his childhood, milo's learnt that the best way to get attention is to act out.
sometimes, milo plays the fool to get attention. he has a good sense of humour, likes to crack jokes, and make people laugh and smile just as much as the next guy. but most of the time, he does what he does best and what comes naturally - what he's learnt to perfect during 8th grade. anything that is classed as bad news, milo is most certainly up for - it's his weakness. graffiti especially is his forté, with drinking and smoking following close behind. even though he's been genuinely reforming since he's been at videlict, old habits die hard.
but don't be deceived like his family is. even when he's playing the bad guy, milo is really just a nice guy in disguise. he may have issues dealing with his emotions and how to show them and/or tolerate them without going off the rails, but he has his heart in the right place. he's not out to corrupt or harm anyone, he never has an ulterior motive. he's just trying to get by by playing up his bad side to get his parents to leave him alone. i mean, if he had no troubles with his family, maybe he'd be perfect like his brother. but he isn't - and if anyone can find a way to accept that, well, milo might just adore you for that.

history:
the 20th of january, 1998 saw the birth of milo atticus - a week earlier than planned, and therefore a shock to his parents, both lovers of meticulous planning. they used to look back on the event and laugh about how he must have been desperate to get out into the world. but that joke isn't mentioned any more, because there's this general uncertain air in the family about whether that's now the truth. which it is - milo is desperate to get out into the world, and as far away from his family as possible.
when he was 10, milo was forced to move from his beloved home town in italy to account for a soccer scholarship his older brother had gotten in america, which left him irrationally angry with his family. this anger only worsened when his nonna and nonno (italian grandparents) died during the first few months of their emigration, and worsened again as he watched his parents' marriage fall apart. during these years, milo found himself growing silently more angry with his family - he needed to find himself an outlet, and so he did.
in middle school, milo willingly let himself be led astray by the wrong crowd. he was roped into plenty of things that a 8th grader shouldn't be involved in - petty crimes, carjackings, joy rides... all of which sent his parents, brother and step-parents flying through the roof as and when they found out. but it was the reaction milo wanted, and so he carried on. however, it began spiralling out of his control, progressing onto bigger crimes and better reactions.
it continued until he was caught by the police robbing a high end clothing store the summer after 8th grade, and his mother and father collectively drew the line. just before the start of his freshman year, milo was ordered to pack his things and move the hell out of his mother's house before a) his brother ratted him out to the police for all the things they hadn't caught him doing, and b) he influenced his little sister's behaviour.
that time couldn't have come sooner. quite frankly, milo was glad he'd ended up doing something so bad, because it meant a brand new start. finally, milo had gotten what he wanted, what he'd really been campaigning for for the entire 8th grade - freedom from his family. and it wasn't even to be able to carry out more bad deeds behind their backs and out of their line of sight like they expected. it was just to get them out of his hair. they had been suffocating him, all those bad memories in his childhood were tied to them, and that meant that any time away from them would do milo a world of good.
and it has done him good - since moving to videlict, milo's gotten a lot better. he still has his taste for adrenaline, though - after all, he needs to keep playing up the bad boy act if he's going to remain 'forced' to stay at this school 'against his will'... if his parents get any inkling that he's reforming, an up-and-coming success story of videlict, he'll be right back to square one. and so milo continues his double life, all because of his inability to simply communicate with those he is supposed to be closest to.
